芸術文化の進化と持続可能性の実現
一般社団法人NeuroPiano は、音楽を愛する全ての人がより豊かな表現を創造し続けられる社会の実現を目指しています。創造的な表現を生み出すためには、豊かな音楽的感性や適切な知識に基づいて楽譜を読み解く能力はもちろんのこと、 表現に結び付いた脳・心・身体の働きを自在に操作できることと、その妨げとなる “心身の拘束”を取り除くことが不可欠です。私たちは、音楽家の感性や解釈を育む音楽教育と心身の機能や技能を育む身体教育の相乗効果を生み出すため、ダイナフォーミックスという新しい学術領域を提案し、その研究・教育基盤の確立と整備を通して音楽家をサポートすることに取り組んでいます。最先端の研究を通して得られた知見は、教育プログラム PEAC を通して、一気通貫に演奏・指導の現場に還元します。
音楽家の未来に資する新たな学術領域である Musical Dynaformics(ダイナフォーミックス)および、その研究開発活動を基盤とし、その成果を音楽家に還元するプロジェクト Music Excellence Project は、株式会社ソニーコンピュータサイエンス研究所の古屋 晋一 研究員により発足されました。一般社団法人NeuroPiano では、これらの科学研究を更に推進すると共に、その成果の社会還元と普及活動に従事しています。

ピアノ演奏は88鍵の鍵盤と複数のペダルの巧みな操作を必要とする極めて難易度の高い運動です。それらを自在に操り、思い描いた多彩な表現を生み出す身体の使い方を習得するため、演奏家は幼少期から膨大な時間を練習に費やします。しかし、その過程で腱鞘炎や局所性ジストニアなどの故障に悩まされる方は少なくありません。演奏家が生涯にわたり表現を探求し続けるためには、表現を生み出す基盤となる最適な身体の動かし方や、脳神経系が高難度なスキルを習得する仕組みを解明し、そのエビデンスに基づく最適なトレーニングを確立することが必要です。我々は独自開発したマルチモーダルセンシングシステム(鍵盤・ペダルの動き、多視点の動画、音声、骨格情報の同時記録システム)に加え、脳波、経頭蓋磁気刺激法、機能的核磁気共鳴画像法(fMRI)といった脳神経活動の非侵襲測定システムを統合し、演奏家の高度な感覚・運動の背後にあるメカニズムを研究しています。研究成果は、身体理解に基づく最適な演奏法の獲得支援、科学的エビデンスに基づくトレーニングの開発などに応用されます。

スポーツの分野ではテクノロジーを用いた最先端のトレーニングが実用化され、多くのトップアスリートが活用しています。楽器演奏はスポーツに勝るとも劣らぬ高度な身体制御が必要であるにも関わらず、そのようなトレーニングはほとんど行われていません。私たちは、演奏家のスキルをさらに向上させるために最適なテクノロジーの使い方を明らかにし、最先端のトレーニング法の開発・検証に取り組んでいます。例えば、手指に装着した外骨格ロボットハンドを用いた力触覚トレーニングや、指先の触覚・筋感覚能力を高める体性感覚トレーニング、和音の中の一音一音を聴き分ける能力を高める聴覚トレーニング、自分では知ることが難しい身体や脳神経の状態を可視化・可聴化するフィードバックトレーニングなど、テクノロジーとサイエンスの観点から音楽演奏に最適なトレーニング法の確立を目指します。

演奏家はコンサートのために複数の長大な楽曲を記憶しなければならず、経験を積んだピアニストでも記憶したはずの楽譜を本番で思い出せなくなる恐怖を完全に払しょくすることは困難と言われています。また、コンクールやオーディションなど緊張を招く場面では記憶が不安定になり暗譜が飛んでしまったり、練習時のパフォーマンスを十分に発揮できなかったりすることがあります。舞台上で最大のパフォーマンスを発揮できるよう、私たちは暗譜のメカニズムの解明に加え、覚えた楽譜を本番で確実に思い出すためのトレーニング法の創出や、緊張によって記憶の働きやパフォーマンスが低下するメカニズムの解明、緊張の克服方法などを探っています。

思い描いた表現の具現化に挑戦する日々の練習の過程で、心身に不調をきたしてしまうことがあります。例えば突然、自分の体が思い通りに動かせなくなる、それが難治性の脳神経疾患として知られる「局所性ジストニア」 です。この疾患は、ピアニストの手指、バイオリニストの左手指や右腕、ドラマーやオルガニストの足、管楽器奏者の口や舌といった身体部位に発症し、身体を思い通りに動かせなくなったり、感覚に異常をきたしたりすることが知られています。ときに演奏家生命を絶つこともある恐ろしい疾患ですが、適切な診断方法や、万人を完治するに至る治療法は未だ確立されていない現状です。私たちは、このような過剰な練習に伴う心身の不調の仕組みを明らかにすることで、不調を予防する身体の使い方や練習法、機能回復トレーニングの創出を目指しています。

ピアノ演奏における音楽的表現は、音の強弱や長さ、音色、タイミング、ペダリングなど、多様な要素によって形づくられます。演奏家は、鍵盤を押す速さや深さ、離鍵の仕方、指や手首、腕の使い方を繊細に調整することで、同じ楽譜からでも全く異なる表現を生み出します。しかし、どのような身体動作がどのような音響的特徴を生み、それが聴き手にどのような印象として知覚されるのかについては、いまだ十分に解明されていません。
私たちは、鍵盤の動き、ペダル操作、演奏音、多視点映像、骨格情報、筋活動などを同時に記録するマルチモーダルセンシング技術を用いて、音楽的表現を生み出す身体動作の仕組みを研究しています。熟練演奏家が音色やニュアンスを作り分ける際の打鍵、離鍵、手指や腕の運動を定量化し、身体動作と音響特徴、聴き手の知覚との関係を明らかにします。
研究成果は、理想とする音色や表現に近づくための新しい練習法、演奏表現を可視化するフィードバック技術、指導現場で用いられる「タッチ」「音色」「ニュアンス」といった感覚的な言葉を科学的に共有するための基盤づくりに応用されます。
