Master Class

音楽監督とアシスタント講師によるマスタークラス

International-Level Master Classes

We provide international-level lessons on a wide range of elements needed for piano performance that include the ability to read and analyze structure in different musical forms, the ability to hear counterpoint and harmony in works by various composers, the ability to distinguish the characteristics of styles from different periods, and performance skills and sound production for expression. Through ongoing master classes and follow-up sessions, we help each and every young pianist to deepen and create their own musical expression by deeply engaging with their inner selves.

Science-based physical education lectures and coaching

Through lectures and coaching, we teach students how to use their bodies efficiently and correctly, how to practice, how to memorize music efficiently, and how to deal with stage fright, based on findings in the fields of kinesiology and neuroscience. In the lessons, in collaboration with art education, we explore with students how to use their bodies to produce the sound that will be appropriate for each passage based on the style of the music. Physical education that is closely linked to musical expression enables each student to achieve the sound and expression they envision.

Technology-based Lesson Support and Practice Support

We support for solving various issues identified during lessons, by using our technology that can record and visualize multimodal information on piano performance. While verbal instruction on skills is challenging for both teachers and students at conventional music lessons, our system facilitates their mutual and intuitive understanding on subtle features of musical expression and/or playing techniques such as how to move the body. This unique opportunity of learning tacit knowledge is possible everywhere, even at home, by means of our app. that can store and replay multimodal information on piano lessons. Students can therefore study again and again, which makes it possible to learn deeply and clearly from a teacher.

Skill checkup and advanced training

As part of PEAC, we use a high-precision sensing system to assess finger agility, tactile sensation, and other sensory-motor functions needed for performance, and use basic passages and assigned pieces as assignments for measurements used to assess performance skills. We find out student strengths, weaknesses, and body use habits and recommend training tailored to each individual based on the data. Through such assessments and training, we aim to help participants realize correct use of their bodies, overcoming of their weaknesses, and prevention of injuries.

The Academy Program,

sponsored by Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc.

The Academy Program launched in August 2020 by Sony Computer Science Laboratories (Sony CSL) is the first example of an academy program under the Music Excellence Project.
At Sony CSL Piano Academy, world-class pianist Dina Yoffe and six instructors with extensive international experience add to PEAC's physical and mental support system by providing instruction and training in aspects of both art education and physical education, including interpretation of international standards for music and support for the learning and pursuit of musical expression.
In the course of this year-long program, the inaugural students refined their musical expression and learned efficient and correct use of their bodies. In addition, advice in art education, which is difficult to verbalize, was added based on scientific evidence and helped students solve their problems efficiently.
The second year of the program started in September 2021.

COMMENTS
FROM DIRECTOR & ORGANIZER

Musical director

Dina Yoffe

The Academy is a new initiative for providing comprehensive physical and art education. I am very happy to be the musical director of such a wonderful groundbreaking project. Instructors who are experienced on an international level in the field of art education, people in the field of physical education who work to achieve the highest level of coordination with arts education, and the wonderful instruments provided by Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing, all combine to make the academy a supportive environment for young musicians. During the first term last year, the students were very motivated despite the tough world they were in with all lessons being run online. An advantage of the online lessons was the adjustable focus and camera views that made physical and technical problems more precisely and immediately visible, and let the students focus their attention on the musical score and articulation. Going forward, I hope that this Academy program will garner praise and recognition in Japan and in many other countries, and lead to the future emergence of great musicians through its activities.

Is culture sustainable? Musicians practice for hours every day in order to add to and develop culture that has been passed down for centuries. However, many musicians around the world still suffer from problems such as not knowing how to use their bodies or how to practice in order to create the tone, resonance, balance, and expression that they envision, or even injuring themselves by continuing to practice in ways that tax their bodies. Through physical education, musicians can learn the correct ways to use their bodies and minds to play music, allowing them to devote themselves more to developing and deepening their expressiveness. This is the goal of our Academy program. In order to achieve this goal, we are all working together to co-create, using the latest technology to precisely analyze performance skills and compare them with those of the instructors, assessing and training motor and sensory functions based on the results of scientific research, and learning about the brain and body, to break through the limits of creativity without worrying about the "ostensible limits of talent."

TEACHERS' COMMENTS

Toward the expression that each of us longs to achieve

It is a joy to be able to communicate with students and make music in an ensemble during their teenage years, which is the most important time in life to work on music. As we explore music together, we can bring out your potential, show you as many options as possible, and provide you with the means to achieve the expression you long to achieve.

Enjoy lessons that value the inner selves of students and the inner aspects of the music

A main feature of this academy is the continuous holding of master classes throughout the year. I feel that taking a look this way on an ongoing basis lets us address the minds of teenagers who are looking for various answers. Ms. Joffe also tries to bring out the inner selves of each student, and I hope that we assistants will be able to follow in her footsteps and give lessons that focus on the inner selves of students and the inner aspects of the music.

STUDENTS' VOICES

I learned new ways to use my paintbrush (my body)

I wanted to learn different ways to use touch to increase my variety of timbre. Whereas, before I would merely use trial and error and sometimes hurt my body, I now feel that the theoretical knowledge taught at the Academy has helped me play with both physical and mental ease. Realizing that I can use any kind of touch by adjusting my brush (the way I use my body), rather than my colors, has changed my playing considerably.

Knowledge to help me deal with my body and emotions when I am nervous

I feel that after a year of learning about the body at the Academy, I can now use my body more extensively. At the same time, I have learned how to come to terms with my body and emotions when I get nervous. In the future, I would like to find more areas of my body that I am not yet aware of to further expand my potential.

I gained dexterity and explosiveness from knowing how to use my fingers

I wanted to be able to use my fingertips with dexterity to play with explosive power. After a year of lessons at the Academy, I am happy with the way I have learned how to use my fingers, and I would like to expand my range of expressiveness by tackling virtuosic pieces, which I have never tried before.
